Kelewele is a popular delicious Ghanaian street food and snack made with spiced fried plantain chunks seasoned with ground red bell peppers, crushed onions and a dash of salt to give it that spicy savory flavour. It is usually accompanied with its soulmate, roasted groundnuts. Surrender to your spicy urges with Kelewele!

(for 4 servings)

  • 1-quart vegetable oil
  • 1 small onion, cut into chunks
  • 3-4 tablespoons grated fresh ginger
  • 2 whole cloves, crushed (optional)
  • 5 ripe plantains, diced into 1/3-inch chunks
  • 3 tablespoons ground chilli pepper
  • salt to taste



  • Heat oil in a deep-fryer or large saucepan.
  • While the oil is heating, purée onion in a blender until smooth. Stir in ginger and cloves.
  • Place plantains in a bowl and pour onion mixture over top. Add chilli pepper and salt; mix until plantains are coated.
  • Fry plantains in the hot oil until browned on all sides, about 5 minutes. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on a paper towel.
