Ingredients

  • 1  medium-sized catfish or chicken
  • 1 small piece of yam
  • 2 tablespoons of ground crayfish
  • 2 scotch bonnet peppers, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon of uziza seeds
  • 1 teaspoon of utazi leaves
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 3 cups of water
  • Salt and seasoning cubes to taste

Instructions

  1. Wash the catfish or chicken thoroughly and cut into bite-sized pieces. Set aside
  2. Peel the yam and cut into small pieces. Boil in a pot until it is soft and set aside.
  3. In a separate pot, boil 2-3 cups of water.
  4. Add the chopped onions, ground crayfish, and scotch bonnet peppers to the boiling water and stir well.
  5. Add the catfish or chicken to the pot and let it cook for about 10-15 minutes, or until it is cooked through.
  6. Crush the uziza seeds in a mortar and pestle and add them to the pot.
  7. Chop the utazi leaves and add them to the pot.
  8. Add the boiled yam to the pot and stir well.
  9. Add salt and seasoning cubes to taste.
  10. Reduce the heat and let the soup simmer for another 5-10 minutes.
  11. Taste the soup and adjust the seasoning as needed.
  12. Serve the Ofe Nsala hot with fufu, yam, or any other starchy side dish of your choice.
