Efo Riro - Vegetable Soup

Efo riro is a popular Nigerian Yoruba soup that is made with leafy green vegetables and a variety of other ingredients. It is a flavorful and nutritious dish that is enjoyed across the country, and it is a great way to incorporate vegetables into your diet. 

Efo riro is not only delicious but also highly nutritious. It is rich in vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants that help to boost the immune system and promote overall health. The green vegetables used in Efo riro are particularly beneficial as they are high in fiber, which aids digestion and helps to lower cholesterol levels.


  • 2-3 bunches of green vegetables (spinach, waterleaf, etc.)
  • 2 onions, chopped
  • 2-3 peppers, chopped
  • 1 cup of crayfish
  • 2-3 cups of meat or fish, cooked and shredded
  • 1 cup of palm oil
  • Salt and other seasonings to taste


  • Wash the green vegetables thoroughly and chop them finely.
  • In a separate pot, heat the palm oil over medium heat.
  • Add the chopped onions and peppers to the pot and sauté until they are soft and translucent.
  • Add the crayfish to the pot and stir well.
  • Add the cooked meat or fish to the pot and stir well.
  • Add the chopped green vegetables to the pot and stir well.
  • Season the mixture with salt and other seasonings to taste.
  • Reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Allow the soup to simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  • Stir the soup occasionally to prevent it from burning or sticking to the pot.
  • Serve the Efo riro hot with any side dish of your choice.
