With a rich historical background and a distinctive flavour, omajowa mushrooms are not only a treat for the taste buds but also a symbol of growth and prosperity for the local communities.

In the heart of Namibia, anticipation fills the air as the months roll into January, February, and March. This is when the revered omajowa mushrooms make their sudden appearance. The Herero people fondly call them omajowa, a term that resonates with tradition and culinary heritage. These unique mushrooms have been a part of Namibia's food culture for generations, representing not only sustenance but also the opportunity for financial support. Harvested by locals, these wild mushrooms play a vital role in enhancing meals and supplementing incomes.

2 pounds of Omajowa mushrooms

Butter for frying

Salt to taste

150g chopped cashew nuts 

2 bunches of spring onions (Chopped)

1 tablespoon of salt

Black pepper to taste

2 cloves of garlic (crushed)



1. Harvest and Clean: If you're fortunate enough to gather fresh omajowa mushrooms, begin by cleaning them gently to remove any dirt or debris.

2. In a pan, melt a generous amount of butter over medium heat. Then add garlic, spring onions and nuts. Allow the butter to sizzle and infuse with its rich aroma.

3. Gently place the cleaned omajowa mushrooms in the pan. Fry them until they are golden brown and crispy on both sides, resembling succulent schnitzels.

4. As the mushrooms cook, season them with salt and black pepper, enhancing their natural flavours.

5. Once cooked to perfection, transfer the omajowa mushrooms to a plate. Serve them as a delectable appetiser or a savoury side dish that pays homage to Namibia's rich culinary heritage.
